Skiathos Town The only town on the island is situated on the east coast, in a bay scattered with small islets. Away from the waterfront, the narrow streets wind past traditionally whitewashed houses with their picturesque red roofs, many garlanded with bougainvillaea. The waterfront itself, a bustling, lively scene, is split in two by the Bourtzi promontory, which boasts a medieval fort, and holds open-air summer concerts. To one side is the Old Harbour, lined with cafes and restaurants, and with an evening fish market; boats from here will take you to various beaches around the island. The new port is the stopping-point for all ferries, and is also the place to catch the hourly buses, or taxis. All amenities can be found close to the harbour, and there is a pharmacy situated along the town's main road, Papadiamantis Street, leading away from the waterfront. The road is named after the island's most famous literary figure, poet Alexandros Papadiamantis, whose turn-of-the-century house is open to visitors.
