Koukounaries Beach, Skiathos

SKIATHOS

The islanders say that Skiathos has up to 80 beaches, including world-famous Koukounaries, and Kanapitsa, Vromolimnos and Banana beaches - sandy paradises for families of all ages, which draw sunworshippers and watersports enthusiasts in high summer to this hospitable island.

But Skiathos has another, unsuspected side. Behind the beaches running along the south coast are the greenest of hills, covered in pine and olive trees. Here in May, June and September, when the temperatures are not too great, you can stroll through wooded valleys to remote monasteries - one, at Evangelistra, is where the Greek flag was first raised in 1827 in defiance of the Turks - or a different, undiscovered shoreline.

And after a day of exploration, or relaxation by the sea, it is time to shower and catch the bus into Skiathos Town, with its bright lights and attractive cobbled, whitewashed streets. Down by the harbour, where sailing boats bob at anchor, it's not hard to find a taverna or bar that takes the fancy, where the warm evening can be passed over a meal of fresh fish and salad, against a backdrop of stars and harbour lights twinkling on the water. Blue skies, clear seas, fine food and wine: perfection.
