Around The Island of Skiathos With only one main road leading down along the south coast from Skiathos Town, access to the rest of the island can seem limited. However, there are several sites of interest worth visiting. Kounistra, which can be reached by car from the main road, is a 17th century monastery restored in 1726, which has wonderful views over the sea to the mainland. Another monastery with a beautiful location is Evangelistria, to the north of the town, which can be reached on foot in an hour. It was built in 1797 in a Byzantine style by monks from Mount Athos, and claims to have raised the first Greek flag in defiance of the Turks in 1827. There is an annual procession to Evangelistria on the Feast of the Assumption every August. An hour's walk further on is Kastro, the old fortified town at the island's most northerly point, which was the main settlement on Skiathos between 1300 and 1830. Three of the churches here have been restored, and just as impressive is the dramatic sheer drop on three sides, and the stunning views. Nearby, and accessible only by boat, are three sea grottoes, named Galazia, Skotini and Chalkini ("The blue", "The dark", "The copper"). |
