Villa Maria is one of a
select group of private villas on Paxos which as well as having their
own swimming pools enjoy the luxury of large gardens and terraces.
Maria is thus well suited to an arrangement where two self-contained
apartments share the same facilities, since not only do the extensive
gardens provide the feeling of space around the villa, but each
apartment has its own separate terrace and outside seating facilities,
as well as its own garden entrance. Only the pool and stone-built
barbecue are shared.
The lower apartment is reached through a gate from the Fontana-Loggos
road below the house, the path leading through the lower garden to a
paved terrace to the front of the accommodation. This terrace, furnished
with a table and chairs, is 12 metres square, offering a spacious
seating area from where to watch the sunlight dappling the trees and
shrubs of the large lower garden; the terrace is also enclosed by a low
fence, making it a safe play area for toddlers. Steps to the side of
the terrace lead up to the shared pool area, with sunbeds and
umbrellas.
The apartment is entered from the terrace. Inside, to the right, is a
good-sized twin bedroom with air-conditioning, and opposite, to the
left, a shower room which also houses the washing machine. Ahead is a
corridor leading into a traditionally furnished kitchen-dining room,
with electric hobs and a mini-oven for those wanting to do some
cooking. The windows of both this room and the bedroom open onto the
front terrace.
Villa Maria’s location, between Loggos and Gaios near the village of
Fontana, makes a car more or less essential for a relaxed stay at the
house, although the taverna at Fontana is reachable on foot in 15
minutes, as are the spectacular cliffs of the west coast. In the car, a
five minute drive will take you down to the picturesque village of
Loggos with its tavernas, supermarkets and boats for hire, while going
the other way the road winds through the sleepy village of Fontana with
its church and taverna and past the new reservoir and shingle beaches,
bringing you to Gaios, the island’s “capital”, in about 10 minutes.
Gaios has a wide selection of tavernas, shops and supermarkets and it is
from here you can catch the sea taxis across to the crystal clear water
and pristine sandy beaches of Anti Paxos.
