9 February 2010 by Tony Wells If you like a proper escape when you are on vacation, you should consider a holiday on the Greek island of Paxos. Nowhere is quieter or easier to get around than Paxos and nothing offers more of a contrast to the hurly burly of your daily life back home than a Paxos holiday. There are holiday destinations aplenty scattered across the Mediterranean, from Benidorm to Bodrum, so what is it about a Paxos holiday that is so different? Well, the first thing in Paxos’s favour is that you can’t fly there, or not directly anyway. This means you avoid the crowds of so many other islands and resorts, even in the peak season. Paxos is a bit difficult to get to, involving an hour’s boat ride from nearby Corfu, and this puts off the large tour operators and many mainstream holidaymakers. Then, when you are on the island, there are many elements of a Paxos holiday that are unlike what you find elsewhere. There are no big hotels or blocks of holiday apartments on Paxos. The roads are narrow, so traffic is limited and moves slowly, even in August. In the coastal village of Loggos, where Paxos holiday specialist Travel à la carte have most of their accommodation – cottages, apartments and private villas with pools – there are no bars pumping out loud music: the night life consists of families and friends sitting out at a taverna under the stars or having a nightcap at one of the little cafes round the harbour. During the day, a Paxos holiday is just as relaxing. From most of Travel à la carte’s holiday accommodation the first beach is only a short walk away, and other beaches are within easy reach. Alternatively, take a stroll to the harbour and pick up one of the small motor boats for hire. These are one of the great pleasures of a Paxos holiday, allowing you to explore the coastlines to the north and east and discover fresh secluded beaches and undisturbed swimming. Then return in the late afternoon for a shower, linger awhile on the terrace in the warm evening air to soak up the sea views, and then saunter down to your favourite taverna for supper. It takes only a couple of days of a Paxos holiday to slip into this new way of life – and a lot longer to slip out of it. Which is why large numbers of visitors return to Paxos time and again and some even turn their Paxos holiday into a permanent arrangement, by buying a house there and never going home!
