Paxos Beach

PAXOS VILLAS JUST A SHORT WALK FROM THE BEACH

28 January 2010 by Tony Wells

More and more holidaymakers to the Greek islands are looking to avoid using a car during their holiday. Travel a la carte has a large number of villas on Paxos near enough to the beach to allow them to do just that.

How often have you wished to yourself: if only I didn’t have to drive while I’m on holiday?  So many of us spend so much of the year charging up and down motorways, grinding through slow-moving traffic or stuck in tailbacks on clogged roads. So the idea of dispensing with a car on holiday is very appealing. Just to be able to step out of the villa and stroll five or ten minutes to the beach is so relaxing and part of what makes a Greek island holiday such a complete contrast to our normal life. Paxos, a little island an hour’s boat ride from Corfu, is ideal for this. Very small, surrounded by clear blue-green seas and with a wealth of clean, quiet beaches, Paxos is just the place to return to a simpler routine. And Paxos specialist Travel a la carte has one of the best ranges of Paxos villas, cottages, apartments and studios within easy walking distance of the sea.

The accommodation in Travel a la carte’s Paxos a la carte programme is based chiefly in and around Loggos, the smallest of Paxos’s three coastal villages.  If what you need is a private villa a few minutes’ walk from the sea, then somewhere like Paradisos will fit the bill, a three-bedroom villa only 10 minutes’ walk from three different beaches on Paxos’s east coast.  (And if you’re feeling too lazy even to walk to the sea, just slip into the pool.) If you prefer to be within walking distance not just of beaches but shops and tavernas as well, so for once you can have another glass of wine without worrying about the drive home, then think about Paxos a la carte’s accommodation in the village of Loggos itself. The Manor House, an impressive old family mansion overlooking the entrance to Loggos harbour, is the Paxos beach villa par excellence, under five minutes’ walk to the nearest beach, with commanding sea views and offering accommodation for up to 16 people in four separate apartments. Two other village properties, Villa Aglaia next door and Maltezos just around the corner, are likewise just a short walk from the beach and the village.

Offering a contrast to these traditional village houses are two newcomers to the Paxos a la carte programme, Lemonia apartment and Villa Daneve. Both are newly renovated, decorated and equipped to the most modern standards and both are an easy stroll to the village amenities and Levrechio and Marmari beaches. Not only that. On their doorstep, bobbing up and down in the gentle waters of Loggos harbour, are a host of pretty pastel-coloured motorboats to hire. What a refreshing way to see the rest of Paxos!  Viewing the island from the sea, mooring at a deserted beach for a light picnic and a swim, or slipping off the boat to snorkel in deeper waters are some of the pleasures boat hire can offer that cars can never match.  And if you stay at one of Paxos a la carte’s village properties, like Lemonia or Daneve, you can be first in the queue for the pick of the boats.

In case you were wondering, this kind of restful holiday, with everything within walking distance and car-free, is not available on every Greek island. Bigger islands like Corfu and Crete can depend on car hire. The beaches on others, like Symi or Skopelos, can’t be reached by foot. Skiathos has beach villas but not in small villages with picturesque harbours. And so on. Paxos, it has to be said, has the perfect combination: villas near the sea, peaceful seaside villages with a sprinkling of shops and restaurants, good beaches within easy reach and warm translucent water for swimming.  Time to give it a try?
