15 February 2010 by Tony Wells Not every villa on the Greek islands needs a swimming pool. If you can stay at a beach villa as close to the sea as Villa Gallikos on Paxos, neither you nor your children will miss a pool. There are those who won’t consider being without a swimming pool at their holiday villa. And it’s true, these days few villas on a holiday island like Paxos, a tiny Ionian paradise an hour’s boat ride from Corfu, are without their own pool, even beach villas within easy walking distance of the sea. But this is quite a recent phenomenon. Until about ten years ago, Paxos beach villas were just that, villas close enough to the beach for swimming to be on your doorstep, and pools were restricted to the less fortunate villas inland, where you required transport to get to the sea for a swim. But the older style of Paxos beach villa is still to be found, and Villa Gallikos is a case in point. When its French owner came to build Gallikos some 30 years or more ago, location was the one thing uppermost in his mind. So the house, a single storey structure nestling among olive trees a 25 minute walk or 10 minute drive from Loggos, Paxos’s smallest coastal village, was built as a beach villa, within a stone’s throw of the sea. A wide terrace in front looks directly out onto the blue-green Ionian sea and from this terrace a path leads down a gentle incline to the beach below. If your children are still young, they will love running down to the beach, plunging into the water and racing back to the house to let you know how warm the water is, how calm the gentle waves lapping against the pebbles, and how they saw sea urchins and shoals of tiny fish as they snorkelled in the shallows. If they are older, you can just swing in the hammock or lie on your sunlounger with a book, while they splash around in the sea just the right distance away. For couples, Gallikos is the perfect off-season hideaway, an outpost of tranquillity and seclusion on the sea’s edge, a deserted beach just below. Travel à la carte has a range of properties in its Paxos à la carte programme, from beach villas like Gallikos to village houses, apartments and cottages in Loggos and inland villas with generous gardens and pools. Many are within easy walking distance of the sea and, because Paxos is so tiny, those that aren’t are just a few minutes’ drive from the nearest beach.
