Climate change on Paxos
As I write, sunshine is pouring through the window of my
London office. But how long will it last? Every year we
British hope for a long hot summer, with weeks of high
temperatures and clear days, and more or less every year
we are disappointed. We are among the world’s busiest
travellers over the summer, and no wonder. For too long
we have suffered cold and wet summer holidays, with
blustery west winds bringing squalls of rain and cold
wind in off the Atlantic ocean, with just a few days of
really hot sunshine (usually when you’re stuck at work).
No wonder the British yearn for a change of climate, and
head off to the Med...

A la
carte holidays to peaceful Paxos
Once upon a time, and not so long ago, if you wanted to
take a holiday on the Ionian island paradise of Paxos,
things were not so simple. To begin with you were
obliged to travel as part of a package, for a fixed
period of one or two weeks. Secondly, flights to Corfu,
the nearest island to Paxos with an airport, were on two
days of the week only, and on both of them the airport
turned into a gigantic rugby scrum...

Away from it all on
tiny Paxos
The Greek island of Paxos, an olive-covered dot in the
Ionian Sea an hour’s boat ride from Corfu, is off the
beaten track when it comes to mainstream tourism. During
the high season a pleasure boat or two may call in at
the main port of Gaios for a couple of hours, or hover
in one of the sandy bays of even tinier Anti-Paxos to
let the trippers plunge into the clear turquoise waters,
but for most of the summer little Paxos follows its own
rhythms of life, into which the visitors slip within a
few hours of their arrival ...

beautiful Loggos
Loggos, the smallest of the three coastal villages on

stone-built village houses around a pretty natural

A New Era in Greek
Holiday Properties
Once upon a time, not a million years ago, the Greek islands were
considered quite a cheap and cheerful destination. Greek
holidays were bucket and spade breaks for families, who
were packed like sardines into the weekly charter
flights from Gatwick and Manchester and tipped out at
the other end, at Corfu, Rhodes or Skiathos airport, for
two weeks in the Mediterranean sun. With the
drachma-sterling exchange rate almost always in
sterling’s favour, the prices at the local tavernas
allowed the family to eat out most evenings and no one
noticed how simple the cooking arrangements were in
their accommodation and that there was no coffee machine
or roasting tin. In those days, a family of five could
eat out, even on a quieter island like Paxos, for £15...

September ... in the sun
In the old days on Paxos, the Gods sent a
sign to tell you when the high season was over and the
pleasanter days of late summer were to begin. The heat
would build and build through the last two weeks of
August until neither the humans nor the atmosphere could
bear it any more. At which point the sky exploded in
loud thunder claps, bolts of lightning split the sky and
rain poured down in bucketfuls for three or four hours.
Afterwards, miraculously, the air was lighter and
fresher, the heat more temperate, and everyone suddenly
more agreeable and cheerful. September was setting
in... read more

Paxos for music lovers or Music for
Paxos lovers
Unbeknownst to many
lovers of classical music on the one hand, and to many lovers of Paxos’s
late summer charms on the other, this idyllic little Greek island an
hour’s boat ride from Corfu has for 25 years been hosting its own
chamber music festival. Each September a small group of the most
talented young musicians from the UK and elsewhere gathers on this
Ionian island paradise to rehearse and perform a short series of
concerts. So if you are thinking of a quiet Greek island holiday after
the August rush, why not arrange a week or two on Paxos to coincide with
this year’s performances on 7, 9 and 11 September?

Peaceful Paxos
Recent reports from the Greek capital Athens

smaller islands like Paxos? ... read more
