Last minute holidays to Paxos
14 June 2011 by Tony Wells

It’s going to be a late booking market this summer, the Sunday Times reported at the weekend.  There are a lot of unsold package holidays out there, it said, to many Mediterranean destinations, including Greece.

It’s interesting that the Times still thinks of holidays to the Med as largely packaged  affairs, with accommodation, transfers and flights all bundled up together and taken with one supplier.  Those days are long gone, even with such apparently complicated destinations like the Greek islands.  Nowadays, nothing is simpler than to put together your own “package”, booking your villa with one company, your flights with another, and your transfers either independently or with the villa company.  Corfu, the nearest airport to Paxos, is now a destination for both easyJet and Ryanair, and this has changed the Paxos holiday completely.  You can travel there for any duration and take advantage of the lower mid-week fares often on offer from the budget airlines.  A non-package villa company like Travel a la carte is very happy for you to arrive and leave on any day of the week, and stay for as long or short a period as you like.

When it comes to putting your own “package” together, the prospect of finding flights can seem off-putting. Many people go straight to the budget airlines, who have the reputation of being the cheapest, especially if you can travel on the quieter weekdays. But in recent times the charter airlines have been fighting back and slashing their seat only prices, particularly on late availability.  True, it means, so far as Paxos is concerned, you will have to fly on a Monday or Friday, as those are the traditional operators flying days to Corfu, but in terms of price you may still be better off.

Nor is it difficult to find and book charter flights.  Sites like Flightline list all available flights, charter and schedules, by airport and date, and have full ATOL protection. A simple search for flights from Manchester to Corfu on 4th July, for instance, brings up a daytime flight with Monarch for £149.50 a seat.  Combine that with a special offer Travel a la carte villa such as Villa Maria, where the rental price at a 30% reduction is £1113, and the week’s “package” holiday for four adults, including transfers, works out at £2007.  Two-week prices can be even better value.  And if you are looking for a real bargain, try night-flights. Prices currently start as low as £126 return for nightflights from London airports, and you can stop the night in a simple hotel in Corfu Town and hop on the morning ferry to Paxos.

So it’s worth looking around to get the best deals, on flights as well as accommodation.  Here at Travel a la carte we are confident we offer the best villa accommodation on Paxos at the best prices.  And we are also very happy to check the flight availability for you, so that you can book the best deal on offer.  Add in our unbeatable meet & greet service between Corfu airport and Paxos, and you don’t need to go on an inflexible, off the shelf package holiday ever again.  You can do things just as cheaply independently, and have much more freedom of choice.
